PAINTINGS

SLIDE SHOW
(loading may take a while, but it's worth it !)

Traditionally, paintings in Bali were done on palm leaves, metal, or pottery by honored artists employed by kings or highest priests.

The techniques used were passed down from one generation to the next and involve strict guidelines must followed by everyone. They often depicted Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, as well as some other Hindu tales, stories, or legends.

Throughout the years, mostly during the 19th century, Balinese painting art has been inspired by foreign influences. Artists from neighboring islands (Java and Sulawesi) and from other countries (Dutch, Italy, and Germany) have come to Bali and brought with them their own techniques, styles, and materials.

As a result, they have also contributed to the Balinese painting art that exists strongly today.
